I discovered a search engine that plants trees when you search!
The other day I was listening to a spotify podcast here in the US, "How to Save a Planet". It's a well produced podcast which you should go check out if you haven't already heard of it. They cover a wide range of topics related to sustainable development and do a great job of relating it back to the average person with actionables at the end of each episode. Their Dec 17, 2020 episode, while not their most engaging episode content-wise, had a super impactful recommendation at the end:
Start using ecosia.org for your online searches!
Ecosia is an online search engine, like Google, that has committed to using the profits from online search to plant trees. They have this really cool way where you can even track, in real-time, the number of trees they've planted and where. To date, ecosia and it's users have planted over 120 million trees (and counting!). Unlike Google, ecosia also values your privacy, so rest assured your search history is not maintained and sold to advertisers.
It's so easy to switch over to ecosia! There is even a chrome plugin that will allow you to set ecosia as your default search engine so you can continue to type your queries straight into your browser.
If you have questions, concerns, or simply geek out about environmentalism let's talk!
